The single largest demographic for traffickers to target is American girls ages 12-14. One of the tools predators use to find young people in on the internet - particularly social media sites like Facebook and Myspace.
"As many as 7.5 million kids under the age of 13 are using the Facebook service, despite the company's official prohibition" - making them more susceptible to internet predators like pimps and traffickers. In a case that was just investigated in San Diego, CA, it was reported that much of the recruiting done by the gang involved was through Facebook. There is no doubt it is a powerful tool - one that can be used for both good and evil.
Facebook declined to comment on the issue that FOX news reported on. Though there have been many solutions to the issue discussed, there is not one might be able to completely ensure that minors are not lying about their age.
Ensuring that your children, children's friends, and young family members are using Facebook safely is something adults need to take responsibility of. Facebook does need to address this growing trend, just as we need to ensure our youth understand the power of the internet - and the dangers that come along with it.
